There are two kinds of retailers: those running a standalone POS that “integrates” with their accounting system (via CSV exports on Friday afternoons), and those running a unified commerce platform where the till, the warehouse, and the back office all speak the same language.
The difference shows up when you’re staring at a stock discrepancy on Monday morning and can’t trace whether the problem is in the POS, the inventory system, or the data sync that runs once a day.
LS Central, built on Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, is designed to eliminate those seams. As an LS Retail Gold Partner, we’ve deployed it across 700+ stores in 13 countries. Here’s an honest look at what it does, where it shines, and when you might prefer something simpler.
What LS Central Actually Is
LS Central is a unified commerce platform that extends Business Central with retail-specific functionality: point of sale, store operations, loyalty, promotions, and real-time inventory across all channels.
It’s not a separate application that syncs with BC. It’s the same database, the same business logic, the same security model — the POS terminal is literally a BC client with a touch-optimised interface.
This architecture has one massive implication: there is no sync. A sale at the till updates inventory, financials, and customer history in the same transaction. A price change in the back office is live at every till immediately. A web order fulfilled from a store updates online stock in real time.
LS Central vs Standalone POS: The Real Comparison
| LS Central on BC | Standalone POS (Shopify, Lightspeed, Square) | |
|---|---|---|
| Inventory sync | Real-time, same database | Scheduled or API-based (minute/hour delays) |
| Pricing | Single price engine across all channels | Separate pricing per system, manual sync |
| Returns | Any channel, any location, real-time stock update | Often limited to store of purchase |
| Financials | One system — POS sales post directly to G/L | Export → import → reconcile |
| Promotions | Engine handles cross-channel rules (buy online, discount in-store) | Channel-specific, manual coordination |
| Offline | Store server handles local transactions, syncs when online | Varies — many cloud-only solutions go dark |
| Hardware | Full support for POS terminals, scanners, scales, payment terminals | Varies — often limited to specific hardware |
| Cost | Higher upfront, lower operational cost at scale | Lower upfront, hidden costs in manual reconciliation |
| Best for | 5+ stores, omnichannel, complex operations | 1–3 stores, simple operations, online-first |
Where LS Central Earns Its Keep
Real-Time Inventory Across Channels
A customer buys online and wants to pick up in store. Your website needs to know whether that store actually has the item — not whether it had it 4 hours ago. LS Central makes this possible because the web store, the store POS, and the warehouse all read from the same inventory record.
This matters for more than just customer experience. It reduces safety stock. When your online channel can see store inventory, you can fulfil web orders from store shelves instead of holding duplicate stock in a separate e-commerce warehouse.
Unified Promotions
A customer gets a 15% loyalty discount online. They walk into a store — does the POS know? With LS Central, yes. It’s the same loyalty engine, the same customer record, the same discount rules. With a standalone POS, this requires a custom integration that breaks the first time either system updates.
Offline Resilience
A standalone cloud POS without internet is a paperweight. LS Central uses a local store server — the POS terminals in that store connect to the server, not directly to the cloud. If the internet goes down, the store keeps transacting. When it comes back, transactions sync automatically. This is non-negotiable for grocery, pharmacy, and high-volume retail.
One System to Maintain
A standalone POS + accounting + inventory means three systems, three vendors, three upgrade cycles, three places where things can break. LS Central means one system. Your finance team, your store managers, and your warehouse team all log into the same platform with role-specific access. When BC gets a new feature (Copilot, AI agents), your retail operation gets it too.
When a Standalone POS Makes More Sense
LS Central is not the right answer for everyone.
You might prefer a standalone POS if you have:
- 1–2 stores and no plans to grow beyond that
- Simple products with no variants, no serial numbers, no lot tracking
- An online-only business that occasionally does a pop-up
- A very tight budget where upfront costs outweigh long-term efficiency
You might prefer LS Central if you:
- Have 3+ stores, or plan to grow there
- Sell across channels (online + physical)
- Need real-time inventory visibility
- Already use (or plan to use) Business Central as your ERP
- Operate in regulated industries (pharmacy, food) with traceability requirements
- Have complex pricing, promotions, or loyalty programs
The Implementation Reality
Implementation takes 8–16 weeks for a typical 5–20 store chain, depending on complexity. The phases:
- Business analysis (2–3 weeks) — mapping your current processes, identifying gaps, configuring the solution design
- Setup & configuration (2–4 weeks) — BC environment, LS Central module installation, POS hardware selection
- Data migration (1–2 weeks) — products, prices, customers, open orders, inventory counts
- Training (1–2 weeks) — store staff, warehouse staff, back office, management reporting
- Pilot store (1 week) — one store goes live, issues fixed, lessons applied
- Rollout (1–3 weeks) — remaining stores, typically 2–5 at a time
Go-live is usually a Tuesday or Wednesday morning — never Friday, never month-end.
Hardware Considerations
LS Central supports a wide range of POS hardware: terminals (HP, Toshiba, Posiflex), scanners, receipt printers, customer displays, payment terminals, and scales. You’re not locked into a single hardware vendor. We typically recommend hardware that your local IT support partner can service — not exotic equipment that needs specialist engineers flown in.
LS Central + Pharmacy: A Specialised Vertical
One of LS Central’s distinctive capabilities is Pharmacy for LS Central — a vertical extension that adds pharmaceutical-specific functionality: prescription management, FMD serialisation, substitution management, and regulatory reporting. We deployed this for Sykehusapotekene, a 100+ pharmacy chain in Norway. If pharmacy retail is your space, this vertical alone justifies the platform choice.
FAQ
Can LS Central work with Shopify or Magento?
Yes. The LS Central e-commerce connector includes pre-built integrations for Shopify and Magento, with a unified product catalogue, real-time inventory, and order orchestration. Orders flow into BC and are routed to the optimal fulfilment location automatically.
What's the difference between LS Central and LS Retail?
LS Retail is the company (the ISV). LS Central is the product — the unified commerce platform built on Business Central. The terms are often used interchangeably in the market, but technically LS Central is the software.
Can I use LS Central if I'm on Business Central Essentials, not Premium?
LS Central requires Business Central Premium. The Premium licence includes manufacturing and service management, which LS Central extends with retail-specific capabilities.
What happens to my existing POS hardware?
Most modern POS hardware is compatible. We assess your existing equipment during the business analysis phase. Anything USB, serial, or network-connected usually works. Very old proprietary hardware (10+ years) may need replacement.
How long does a typical deployment take for a 20-store chain?
Plan for 12–16 weeks from kickoff to full rollout. Pilot store at week 8–10, remaining stores in waves of 3–5 per week. The schedule is adjustable — we can compress or extend based on your team’s capacity for change.
