Business Central vs Finance & Operations: which Microsoft ERP is right for you?

Microsoft makes two ERP products under the Dynamics 365 umbrella: Business Central and Finance & Operations. Both are proper, capable systems — but they’re built for very different organisations. Picking the wrong one costs you time, money, and a painful migration later. Here’s how to tell them apart.

The short answer

Business Central is Microsoft’s ERP for small and mid-sized businesses. It covers finance, sales, purchasing, inventory and operations in one tidy package. Deployments typically take a few months, costs are predictable, and the SaaS model means Microsoft handles the infrastructure. If you have up to a few hundred employees and your operations don’t span multiple legal entities or highly complex supply chains, Business Central is almost certainly the right fit.

Finance & Operations (F&O) is Microsoft’s enterprise-tier ERP. It’s built for larger organisations with multi-entity structures, sophisticated manufacturing processes, global supply chains, or deep compliance requirements across multiple countries. It’s a bigger investment — in time, cost, and project governance — but it handles complexity that Business Central simply isn’t designed for.

What Business Central is built for

• Finance, sales, purchasing, inventory and service management for SMEs
• Fast, agile deployment — typically 2–6 months for a focused scope
• SaaS-first, updated continuously by Microsoft, no servers to run
• Native integration with Microsoft 365 (Outlook, Excel, Teams, Power BI)
• A single legal entity or a small number of related companies
• Custom extensions via Microsoft AppSource or bespoke AL development
• Ideal for: growing businesses, professional services, distributors, light manufacturers, retailers (especially with LS Central)

What Finance & Operations is built for

• Multi-entity finance with consolidation, intercompany transactions and global chart of accounts
• Advanced supply chain: procurement, warehouse management, transportation, demand planning
• Manufacturing: production orders, bills of materials, capacity planning, costing
• Project management and accounting for project-based businesses at scale
• Complex compliance across multiple tax jurisdictions and regulatory regimes
• HR and payroll (basic), with deep integration to the Power Platform and Azure
• Ideal for: mid-to-large manufacturers, global distributors, enterprise retailers, professional services firms with 200+ employees

How to choose

These signals point clearly towards one or the other:

Choose Business Central if:

• You have a single legal entity (or a small group with simple intercompany needs)
• Your headcount is under ~300 and you don’t expect to triple in size overnight
• You want a faster, lower-risk implementation
• Your manufacturing, if any, is relatively straightforward (assembly, light production)
• Budget for implementation is in the range typical for mid-market ERP projects

Choose Finance & Operations if:

• You have multiple legal entities that need consolidated reporting
• You run complex manufacturing (discrete, process, lean) with detailed costing requirements
• Your supply chain spans multiple countries, warehouses, or logistics providers
• You need advanced project accounting (time and materials billing, WBS, revenue recognition)
• Your compliance requirements are genuinely complex across jurisdictions

When in doubt: start with Business Central. It’s easier to grow into F&O later than to maintain an over-engineered system for a business that doesn’t need it yet.

Can they work together?

No — you don’t run both at once. They’re separate platforms and you choose one as your core ERP.

That said, both have retail extensions built on top of them:

• LS Central runs on Business Central and is the preferred retail and hospitality solution for mid-market retailers
• Dynamics 365 Commerce runs on Finance & Operations and is the enterprise omnichannel retail platform — covering POS, e-commerce, loyalty and merchandising at scale

If retail is your business, the choice of ERP also determines which retail platform you use.
